Yasuyuki Kitano and Harumi Sakamoto invited hundreds of guests, including Japanese celebrities, to their wedding reception in 2003. Kitano claimed that he was a member of the Arisugawa branch of the imperial family. However, the Arisugawa branch died out for lack of a male heir more than 90 years ago. In 2006, Kitano and Sakamoto were were exposed and both sentenced to two years and two months in jail.

Today the Tokyo District Court convicted Yasuyuki Kitano and Harumi
Sakamoto of fraud. The couple held an elaborate "royal" wedding
in 2003. At the time, Kitano claimed that he was a member of the
now defunct Arisugawa family. Yasuyuki and Harumi recieved
congratulatory gifts worth almost 3 million yen!
