My first nickname was “Frizz.” My mom described my toddler hair as something like a red afro. The curls were so kinky tight, it was nearly impossible to scrape a brush through them. Saturday nights were the worst, when after a bath, I sat on the floor in front of Mom’s chair and she tried to comb the “rat’s nests” out of it.
