While most Americans are familiar with the Underground Railroad that helped Southern slaves escape north before the Civil War, the first clandestine path to freedom ran for more than a century in the opposite direction.  

The winners of the Ford Freedom Awards essay contest received their awards Thursday morning at the University of Detroit Mercy's Calihan Hall. Nearly 1,600 students from 40 area schools were in attendance.  

Political cartoons are "on the frontline of freedom" as recent attacks on cartoonists in Iran and Syria showed, famous American cartoonist Kevin KAL Kallaugher told AFP in Bucharest.
