Abby Wambach Out For Olympic Games
The U.S. women's soccer team was dealt a devastating blow last night as their lead scorer, Abby Wambach , broke her left leg in an exhibition game against Brazil. After a violent collision with Brazilian defender Andreia Rosa during the first half of the match, Wambach was taken off the field by paramedics. She fractured both her Tibia and fibula, and will have surgery Thursday.
The surgery will entail inserting a titanium rod into her leg. Wambach is expected to be out for at least 12 weeks, this means she will miss the Olympic games in Beijing.
The U.S. eventually won the match, 1-0, when defender Natasha Kai , brought in to replace Wambach, scored in the second half on a header off a free kick from Carli Lloyd. This win brings the American team's 2008 record to 21-0-1, and extends their home win streak to 31.
The first Olympic match for the U.S. will be August 6 against Norway. Without Wambach, it will most likely be a much more difficult game.
