By Trevor Stokes, Staff Writer Getting money owed to you from the government sounds like a no-brainer, but across Alabama income tax rebate checks have been returned from faulty mailing addresses and remain uncashed. The average value of the checks is $1,183. The Internal Revenue Service recently disclosed the names of residents still owed money from 2008.  

The program provides rebates of up to $650 on property taxes or rent to eligible residents who are 65 or older, 50 or older and widowed, or those 18 or older with a permanent disability.  

We just had a home energy audit performed on our house, and are preparing to pull the trigger on several thousand dollars' worth of insulating, weather stripping, leak sealing, etc. We're trying to maximize the amount of rebate money we can receive, either through local or federal tax credits, or through stimulus money, NYSERDA or some other source. We're having trouble finding out what exactly is available for the type of work we're having...  

That seeming $10M discrepancy I mentioned between the amount claimed that the City would save during the CUPE strike--$30M--and the actual savings--$20M--is just too big to ignore.Something is very suspicious here that needs checking out.
