Election Countdown: 26 Days Until Election
Oct. 9, 2008
A Stock Trader puts his finger to his head on the floor of the New York Stock exchange October 9, 2008 in New York City. After a day in which the markets showed early promise in gains, the Dow fell 678 points, falling below 9000 points at the end of the trading day. (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images North America) Election polls continue to be influenced by the recent economic downturn, leaving many voters feeling like the stock trader pictured above. The Dow closed down 8%, making it the seventh day of trading in a row that the index has lost ground. Trading didn't seem to be helped by the IMF's decision to cut interest rates. Speaking of the IMF, is it just me or do these guys look like Bond villains?

On the campaign front, John McCain sent his mother to campaign for him in Arlington, Virginia, where she told the audience interesting stories about growing up during the Civil War.

Meanwhile Barack Obama was focusing on Ohio with an appearance in Dayton. Ohio is a key battleground state for both candidates.
In other news on the campaign trail
- It turns out Sarah Palin is verrry distantly related to the late Princess Di.
- Joe Biden was introduced at a rally as John McCain.
- Michelle Obama appeared on Larry King Live to talk about some of the mud being slung at her husband.
Remember, it's only 26 days to the election, and for many there's still time to register. Check your state's registration deadlines here.
