McCain and Keating: Till Death Do Us Part

The Washington Times has dug up a pretty damning letter and reply between Senator John McCain and the man who came to personify the Savings and Loan Scandal, Charles Keating.

On 5 March 1986, McCain wrote to Keating on official Congressional letterhead:

“Dear Charlie,

I was just informed that you received a letter listing you as a member of my Finance Committe and requesting that you solicit funds for my campaign.

I want to assure you that the letter was sent in error, and I had previously told my finance people that any dealings concerning the campaign would be conducted by me.

As you know, I’m deeply appreciative of your friendship and support over the years and I would not want to do anything which would offend you. Please accept my apology, and be assured that there will be no future repetition of this kind.

I will look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely,
John McCain
Member of Congress”

Six days later, 11 March 1986, Keating responded with a hand written note on the same document:

Senator John,
Don’t be silly. You can call me anything write anything or do anything. I’m yours until death do us part.
-Charlie

See for yourself:

This was during McCain’s run for US Senate…. he wasn’t actually elected to the Senate just yet.

Republicans don’t seem to realize that our party’s candidate has just as many skeletons in his closet as Barack Obama. But unlike Barack Obama, he’s been able to hide behind war stories to save his neck. But as the McCain campaign continues to force feed Sarah Palin with vile talking points that sound like they were written by Mitt Romney and his goons, John McCain’s grace period might be quickly approaching an end, as is evident in his severe drop in the polls.

The Washington Times has been having trouble coping with all the traffic this letter has generated, so you know this is going to be an “October Surprise.” If anybody knows anything about Congressional typewriters, letterheads, or fonts in 1986 and you have a shred of compassion for this womanizing old man who has screwed the Republican Party over more times than anyone can count; you may want to check to make sure this isn’t another Dan Rather forgery.
