OBAMA vs. CLINTON: Averting a Democratic “Amistad”

Amistad
Uploaded by MovieTrailerJunkie

Since the revolutionary nature of their respective candidacies and the fanaticism they have inspired amongst their supporters has more or less predetermined the “profile” of whom either of them will now have to select as their vice-presidential running mate ~ and since the acrimony which has developed between their competing camps has all but ruled out any possibility of each selecting the other to serve as their veep should they win the nomination ~ both Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are each going to have to pick the Next Best Thing to the other according to the following simple formula: Obama is going to have to nominate a Hillary-like woman and Clinton is going to have to tap a Barack-like “Transcendent” Black man. This is the only way the Democratic Party will be able to avert an Amistad-style “Negro Revolt” should Clinton win the nod of the superdelegates or forestall a Geraldine Ferraro-led “White Flight” to John McCain should Obama become the nominee.

Once Obama secures his party’s nomination his choice of running mate will be critical to his success in the general election against McCain. Hillary Clinton’s tenacious campaign, having whetted the appetites of millions of Americans for the election of their country’s first female president, has narrowed Obama’s vice presidential options down to the selection of a Hillary-esque, pant-suit-wearing, National Security-strong female as his deputy. My shortlist would comprise Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, California Senator Diane Feinstein and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Senator Hutchison would be a particularly inspired choice for even though she is a Republican (and a rather hawkish one at that) the opportunity to be a part of a truly transformational administration may persuade her to “evolve” her long-standing support for the Bush Iraq policy and unite with Obama in a transcendental presidential ticket which combined both male and female, Democrat and Republican, Black and White.

Hillary Clinton, for her part, could derail this Obama “Dream Ticket” by throwing a curve-ball of her own. Since any prospect of her tapping Barack as her veep has all but faded from view (and since her securing of the nomination through the Machiavellian machinations of the superdelegates would ignite a nuclear war within the Democratic Party), Clinton is now left with no choice but to pick America’s only “Other Obama” as her running mate. And that man is former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Colin Powell. Such a move by Clinton would be a stunning stroke of pure political genius for it would provide her with a second-in-command who was unencumbered by Obama’s perceived liabilities (inexperience, Jeremiah Wright, the Weather Underground, “bitter-gate”, etc.) while possessing many of the attributes which have made the Illinois senator so appealing and would, at a stroke, win her back all of the Black voters whom she and her gaffe-prone husband’s race-baiting and Southern-strategizing antics have alienated.

By selecting their running mates in this fashion both Obama and Clinton would each acquire a “variant” of the other without any of those traits which they have undoubtedly grown to dislike about one another. The victor would thus win over the losing candidates’ disillusioned supporters, unify the entire Democratic movement, draw in millions of independents and moderate Republicans and sweep aside that gook-hating, napalm-slinging and fear-mongering GOP bigot in their unstoppable march to a Democrat landslide come November.
