BANGOR, Maine — Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul will return to Maine on Saturday in an effort to score his first victory of the primary season.

The Texas congressman spent two days in Maine ahead of last weekend, when state Republicans began caucusing.

Now, Paul is set to appear at a Maine Republican Party event on Saturday evening, during which the state GOP will announce the results of a presidential preference poll. Paul also will appear earlier in the day at caucus sites in Sanford, Lewiston and New Gloucester.

Most insiders believe Paul is in a close race with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to win the Pine Tree State. The two other candidates, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, have not campaigned in Maine.

Romney was scheduled to visit Portland for an event late Friday.
