Phillies Take Game 1 of World Series

With the help of a two-run homerun by Chase Utley in the first inning and seven strong innings by pitcher Cole Hamels the Phillies took game one of the 104th World Series, 3-2.

Both teams put up a fight, and it'll be surprising if the Phillies sweep. Still, although the Rays scored two runs their hitting was stale and starting pitcher Scott Kazmir seemed a little off his game.

For the Phillies Wednesday night's game came down to solid pitching. Hamels held the Rays to only five hits, none after the fifth inning. Philadelphia closer Brad Lidge held it together in the ninth, striking out Carlos Pena and Evan Longoria and getting a third out on a pop up by Carl Crawford.

Watch the Phillies and Rays square off again tonight in game 2 at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) on FOX.
