Unique YouThe last thing you want to remember about your prom is how you arrived, radiant and decked to the nines, only to discover that girl in your Biology class was wearing the exact same dress in the same color. With the same shoes, natch. While accidental twins can make for interesting party conversation, dress duplication is not exactly every girl's perfect prom dream. That's why you want to find the most unique prom dress possible. Here are our suggestions:
1. Check out your local vintage store! Or Ebay.If you're wearing a one-of-a-kind vintage dress, no one's going to show you up in the same thing - GUARANTEED. What's more, you can find quality pieces - that you'll want to wear again! - for less than you'd pay for some polyester thing on the internet. Trust me on this one...you'll like the vintage dress way more than the super-expensive-covered-in-sequins dress about six years down the line. A girl I knew in high school spent $5 on her vintage prom dress - and looked better than all of us on the dance floor. Go figure.
2. Hit up the handmade clothiers at Etsy. There are some amazing one-of-a-kind dresses available on Etsy, although some of them are a bit more expensive than what you'd find in your standard vintage shop. There's also the opportunity to communicate directly with dressmakers - although it may be a little too close to prom time to order up a custom gown on the internet. Unless someone is out to sabotage you, there's little chance you'll end up in the same dress as the girl next door.
I particularly love this green fringed dress by designer Veronica Reis (visit her Etsy store
here ).
3. Make it Yourself!Okay - I'm not advocating making a prom dress all by your lonesome, especially if you have zero sewing skills whatsoever. But if you know what you want and can find the right colors and patterns for its execution, it's not actually that expensive to have a dress made for your big night. There's also cost-effective modifications: if there's a dress hanging in your mom's closet that she's willing to part with, but you don't quite fit into it yet, you can have it modified to work for prom - with her permission, of course!
