AFL-CIO forum

Get ready for the AFL-CIO forum. Democratic presidential candidates are preparing statements and presentations for the AFL-CIO forum -- let's hope this discussion focuses on real issues!

AFL CIO doesn't endorse anyone, or does it endorse everyone...

The AFL-CIO’s executive council voted to NOT endorse any presidential candidate.

I guess there were too many contrasting views about which Democrat to support in the election.  Now that the AFL/CIO isn't backing one particular candidate, each of the 55 member unions is free to make individual endorsements.  And you know what that means...more time and more political money is going to be spent courting unions.

It is a smart move on the AFL-CIO's part.  This decision will require each of the candidates to spend time and energy listening to each of the unions and catering to their demands.

But is it a smart move for the Democratic party?  Unions will vote democratic in the election almost by default.  This isn't a segment of the population that needs to be convinced of Democratic principles.  Spending more time and advertising dollars to woo union leaders isn't ultimately goin to help the Dems win the Whitehouse.   Those dollars should be spent on swing voters in swing states.  Votes that might make the difference.
