Kostelic stays in super-combined contention

Croatia's Ivica Kostelic stayed in contention to defend his World Cup super-combined title in what is the finale of two-discipline event Sunday at the 2014 Sochi Olympics alpine venue.

On-form Swiss Beat Feuz topped the times for the downhill part of the super-combined, which will be decided by a slalom beginning at 1000 GMT.

But with a deficit of only 1.52secs to the Swiss, slalom specialist Kostelic is well poised to claim the points he needs to claim his second successive super-combined crown.

Currently, he leads Feuz by 16 points in the race for the super-combined title.

Feuz, who claimed a precious 100 points for his victory in a downhill here Saturday, has however piled the pressure on the Croatian for the overall World Cup crown.

Prior to Sunday's race Kostelic held a 50-point overall lead on Feuz.

Frenchman Adrien Theaux, third in Saturday's downhill, was second in the downhill section of the super-combined at 0.30sec behind Feuz's leading time of 2min 00.62.

Italian Dominik Paris was third at 0.51, while American Bode Miller was fourth at 0.66 and Swiss Carlo Janka was fifth at 0.70.

American Ted Ligety, the Olympic combined champion in 2006, finished a whopping 4.27secs off the pace of Feuz to all but end his hopes of a podium place.
