CHARLOTTE, N.C.—AJ Allmendinger looks at the results of his first 11 races as a Penske Racing driver and he cringes a little bit. Sitting 22nd in the standings, Allmendinger can point to several races where he ran well only to have issues.

22 cars laid down laps in the Sprint Showdown qualifying session and, after all of them had laid down a time it was AJ Allmendinger who was the fastest.
