Kuwait lawmakers gather on fate of prime minister

Kuwait's parliament is meeting in a closed-door session for a vote that could bring down the prime minister and throw the country into a political crisis.

The motion is backed by opposition parliament deputies who accuse Prime Minister Sheik Nasser Al Mohammed Al Sabah of trying to roll back political freedoms. Kuwait has one of the few elected bodies in the Gulf with the power to challenge authorities.

A majority in the 50-seat parliament is needed to demand the resignation of the prime minister, who is a nephew of Kuwait's ruler. It was unclear whether the opposition can muster the votes Wednesday.

Last month, the prime minister faced questioning in parliament after security forces clashed with opposition lawmakers at a Dec. 8 rally.
