No. 2 Michigan State beats Fla. Gulf Coast 97-58
Durrell Summers scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half, Kalin Lucas scored 21 and No. 2 Michigan State pulled away from Florida Gulf Coast for a 97-58 victory Friday night.
The Spartans (1-0) started sloppy and sluggish, but Summers' go-ahead dunk on an alley oop sparked a 17-4 run that put them in control. Michigan State then coasted to its 33rd straight win in a home opener and 40th in a row against a nonconference team at the Breslin Center.
Anthony Banks led the Eagles (0-1) with 10 points.
The Spartans overcame poor play early against a lackluster team in its third Division I season. They probably won't be able to do that in upcoming games against Gonzaga, Florida, No. 6 North Carolina and No. 3 Texas.
Raymar Morgan made a surprising appearance for Michigan State, playing on a sprained right ankle that was expected to keep him out after he missed two exhibition games with the injury.
The senior forward was welcomed by a rousing ovation when he entered the game with 14:40 left in the first half and Michigan State leading 10-8. Morgan was 0 for 4 from the field and 0 for 4 from the line, but grabbed a rebound and made an assist.
Chris Allen and Delvon Roe also returned for the Spartans after missing their preseason game against Grand Valley State. Allen had a groin strain and Roe a concussion.
Just when Michigan State seemed to be at full strength, Draymond Green limped off the court with 3:16 left. He was trying keep weight off his right leg after an 11-point, 10-rebound game.
Chris Allen had 10 points and five assists while Korie Lucious and freshman Derrick Nix each had 11 points for the Spartans.
Michigan State didn't look like it was fired up to play Florida Gulf Coast, an Atlantic Sun Conference team, in its first game since losing to North Carolina in the national championship game at Ford Field in Detroit.
Lucas let Derrick O'Neil strip the ball from him on Michigan State's first possession and watched him score the game's first points on a layup.
The Eagles led 4-0 — they forced four turnovers in less than 4 minutes — and scored some go-ahead baskets before Allen's lob and Summers' slam put the Spartans ahead 17-16.
Michigan State led 44-27 at halftime. Summers' only points in the second half came with 11:44 left when his three-point play put Michigan State ahead 64-41.
