Aaliyah is being remembered today on the 10th anniversary of her death. The promising young singer was killed in a terrible plane accident in 2001, just after she had finished shooting the music video for her hit "Rock the Boat."

The singer, who was just 22 when she died, was best known for her hits like "Try Again" and "Rock the Boat." She got her start on the TV show Star Search at the age of 10, and signed with Jive Records at the young age of 12.

From there, she put out a successful debut album titled Age Ain't Nothing But a Number, with direction from her mentor R. Kelly. The album was certified double platinum. Aaliyah dropped from Jive Records after rumors swirled that she was illegally married to Kelly. She was 15 at the time, and Vibe later revealed a marriage certificate that listed them as married as of August 1994. She was listed as 18, not 15, on the document and her parents had the marriage annulled the following year.

She was engaged to Damon Dash at the time of her death, and they had planned to marry after the premiere of The Matrix.

Aaliyah died on August 25, 2001 after the small plane carrying her and the eight others on board crashed just 200 feet off the runway in the Bahamas. Apparently filming finished early and Aaliyah opted to leave a day early and the designated airplane was smaller than the one they'd arrived on. When the small plane took off, it was 700 pounds over the maximum takeoff weight. Authorities say the plane crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all of the passengers onboard.

It was later discovered that the pilot was not approved to fly the plane he was attempting to fly, and the autopsy found there were traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system. The findings in the inquest also suggest that even if the singer had survived the crash, her recovery would have been pretty impossible given the severity of her injuries.
