Downey, 36, made some big changes in his life. He trimmed 15 pounds off his muscular frame.
“For me to be able to continue my career as a banger and energy guy, I had to re-create myself,” Downey said Tuesday at City Ice Arena in Detroit. “I had to rebuild the body, had to get faster and had to work on my game.”
More important, Downey worked to change his lifestyle, which he said he believes had an effect on his on-ice performance.
“I wasn’t happy,” said Downey, an unrestricted free agent who is trying out with the Red Wings. “I was happy with my career, but ... I had a lot of off-ice issues that no one’s really seen. I kept a lot of things hidden, and I faced them.
“I’m not about chasing women. I’m not about going to the bars anymore.”
