Harang done for season after appendectomy

CINCINNATI, Aug. 24 (UPI) --

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Aaron Harang will miss the balance of the 2009 baseball season after undergoing an emergency appendectomy.

The Reds said on their Web site the procedure followed an examination Saturday while they were in Pittsburgh. Harang said he felt a sharp pain when he woke up Saturday morning.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Joann Lohr at The Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati.

said Manager Dusty Baker.

The 6-foot-7 inch, 260-pound Harang is the second Reds starter sidelined by a season-ending injury.

Right-hander Edinson Volquez underwent Tommy John elbow ligament surgery Aug. 3 and is not expected back until at least the middle of the 2010 season.

Harang went 6-14 with a 4.21 ERA and a team-high 142 strikeouts in 162 1/3 innings over 26 starts this season.
