It's easy to get excited about a 22-year-old prospect who jacked 27 homers between AA and AAA last season.  Especially when, during his September cup of coffee with Cincinnati, and in his second at-bat for the Reds, he blasted one about 30 rows deep over the right field fence of Great American Ball Park. Gomes posted impressive power numbers in 2009, batting .267 with 20 home runs and 51 RBI in just 281 at bats. The problem was his feast-or-famine numbers against right-hand pitching. When Jay Bruce came up from Louisville in 2008 he showed shades of brilliance. He reminded me in a small way of Mickey Mantle. He certainly had the strikeouts down pat. After settling down, he showed no further signs of greatness last season. In 2009 his power revealed itself on the major league level. He had 15 home runs before Memorial Day and looked like he was set for a 40/HR year. His average bottomed and we see now a true .240 hitter...

While Scott Rolen is still in the "honeymoon" stage with the Reds, I will be evaluating him on a 40-game season.
