Packers Suspend Johnny Jolly

It was with a heavy heart that I read about Johnny Jolly suspension from the Packers today. They have suspended him for the 2010 season, but essentially they’ve said “see ya!” for good. He had try and get reinstated after the Super Bowl.

He did it to himself, of course. He’s been a distraction because of legal problems relating to his violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. He’s in a heap of trouble with the law, and I suppose keeping him on the team would have been a bigger distraction. He was caught in 2008 with 200 grams of codeine. Again with the codeine! This is the new NFL drug, and who knows if this one went into the “purple drank.” All I know is Jolly, a player I liked and really respected, could get up to 20 years in jail.

Not only was Jolly a likable player, he was good. He was also an important part of the new Dom Capers 3/4 scheme. Last year they traded Aaron Kampman (who kicked butt on defense but then couldn’t deal with the stance required for the 3/4) and now without Jolly and Kampman the defense looks very weak to me. There is always a chance they can pick up a guy or two before training camp starts, but when I look at say, the Vikings and their offense, I can’t see the Packers defensive unit measuring up.
