Darren Sharper said that the New Orleans Saints had about 50 years of combined experience in their defensive backfield during their much-heralded victory over the New England Patriots. He chuckled when he said it, but he wasn't exaggerating. The Saints have overhauled their defensive backfield with a group of veterans that easily could have been dismissed as over the hill.  

David Thomas has no beef with the New England Patriots. He wasn't offended that they unloaded him to New Orleans this preseason for a 2011 seventh-round pick, though few would have blamed the most prolific tight end in the history of the Texas Longhorns for wondering if he was worth a little more.  

The New Orleans Saints deactivated running back Reggie Bush and starting cornerback Jabari Greer for Monday night's game against the New England Patriots. Bush also missed the Saints' previous game with left knee swelling. Greer, replaced by Randall Gay, has missed three games with a pulled left groin.  

A shot at ruining New Orleans' perfect record is not the only reason the struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers and young Josh Freeman are excited about facing the unbeaten Saints. Sunday begins a stretch in which the Bucs (1-8) play five of seven games against NFC South rivals, and they're eager to see how their rookie quarterback holds up in his first tour through the division.  

Bill Belichick and Bill Gates have more in common than their first name, the way Saints coach Sean Payton sees it. "You have to pay attention to the Microsofts of the world if you're some day wanting to compete in that industry," Payton said this week as New Orleans prepared to host Belichick's New England Patriots.  

Until now, Pierre Thomas could not recall playing for a football team at any level that was 10-0, or averaged 36.9 points per game, or had 18 different players score touchdowns. So the running back says that the New Orleans Saints' accomplishments this season have been remarkable, even if the teams they've beaten have a combined 37-63 record.  

The New Orleans Saints have brought back Mike McKenzie to replace cornerback Leigh Torrence, who will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. The Saints placed Torrence on injured reserve late Monday. McKenzie, an 11-year veteran, was released by the Saints in the offseason following injuries to each knee in consecutive seasons.  

Laurence Maroney's fourth-down touchdown run gave the New England Patriots a 7-3 lead over the New Orleans Saints at the end of the first quarter on Monday night.
