HGV (Heavy Good Vehicle) drivers are often in high demand across the UK and can be a great career choice for anyone who is a good driver or is looking for something challenging and enjoyable. HGV drivers are needed for almost any transportation job but there are a few things you need to do first before fully qualifying to drive such vehicles.
Firstly you must be licensed to drive a HGV and obtain training for the vehicle. You can obtain professional training through a qualified HGV training provider at a cost that varies per provider and they will fully prepare you for your test to receive a HGV license. The best way to ensure you pass your test and receive a license is to go to a qualified instructor, a qualified teaching school or a company with a record of experience in HGV driving, training and instructing.
There are two types of HGV licenses you need to apply for: a Category C license which allows you to drive single unit HGVs or a Category C+E license which will allow you to drive anything with a removable trailer, such as an Arctic truck. Many HGV drivers will get a Category C license and, after a few years of experience, apply for a Category C+E license as trucks on a C+E license require more skill and technique to drive so drivers much be highly trained.
You must take two tests to gain a HGV license, a practical and a theory test. The theory test is taken (or can be taken) in two parts on days of your choice but you must pass both parts of these tests to apply for a practical HGV driving test. The practical test will judge your awareness, knowledge of road signs/safety and, of course, your skills and manoeuvring of HGVs onto bays and loading docks.
Driving any HGV vehicle requires good vehicle handling and manoeuvring and it isn't a job to be taken lightly, as you will need to be an expert in high way codes and road markings as well as the skill involved in driving a HGV. Some vehicles can be very difficult to handle so it is important to receive the highest quality and correct training before even applying for your HGV license and ensuring you waste no time and money by passing first time.
