Save the Children Sweden is a membership-based organisation with 250.000 members and supporters.
Save the Children started working in Côte d’Ivoire in 1996. Save the Children Sweden (SCS) and Save the Children UK (SCUK) unified their programmes in Côte d’Ivoire in 2010 under the management of SCS. The main office is in Abidjan with seven sub-offices (Guiglo, Man, Odienné, Bouaké, Korhogo, Abengourou and Bondouko). Core programme areas are child protection, education, and child rights governance. Currently with the emergency response additional thematic areas such as health, wash, nutrition, food security and livelihoods are included. 321 national and 31 expatriate staff are employed including those on emergency response contract.
By January , the responsibility for the Country program will be transitioned from Save the Children Sweden to Save the Children International.
We are now seeking a Country Director for Côte d’Ivoire
The assignment period is two years, with possible extension. The position is accompanied for spouse only (family posting to be reviewed in 2012).

Scope of the Role
As a member of the West Africa Senior Leadership team, you will have shared accountability for Save the Children’s international development and emergency programming in the region To achieve our ambitious goals and breakthroughs for children, the leadership team will, in collaboration with Save the Children Members and in conjunction with the other regional organisations, aim to drive growth internationally to $2 billion by 2015.
The Country Director will lead the transformation of the country to a new operating model, whilst also delivering Save the Children’s strategy within the country through:
Delivering quality programmes, including advocacy, for children; and
Serving Save the Children Member organizations and their donors
The Country Director´s key responsibilities:
Be responsible for Save the Children’s offices in Abidjan and its seven sub offices.
Manage and lead a complex organisation in a sensitive context in a period of
major change within Save the Children International.
Ensure that programmes are designed and implemented in a comprehensive
manner while aligning to Save the Children’s national, regional and global
priorities.
Ensure that country strategy and the annual country plan are implemented,
followed up and evaluated.
Develop a fundraising strategy in line with the overall country strategy and donor
requirements.
Ensure effective financial and grants management systems.
Ensure risk assessment and quality assurance mechanisms are in place.
Ensure effective human resource policies and staff development.
Maintain clear overview of the legal, political, economical context through
operational and security perspectives.
Ensure implementation and management of SC safety and security in compliance
with the organization’s duty of care policy to its staff.
Represent Save the Children in the country to national government, embassies,
partner organisations and other stakeholders.
Required Qualifications:
University degree in International Development work, Human rights, Political
science or Management.
At least 10 years management experience within the area of international
development work and human rights issues, particularly with child rights.
Extensive experience from management including coordinating skills,
programming, ability to plan according to overall strategies, staff management,
leadership and team building.
Knowledge and experience of working with European, US and institutional donors.
Experience of working in conflict areas and under hardship conditions preferably in
West and Central Africa.
Fluency in English and French, both verbal and written, knowledge of Swedish or
other Scandinavian language is an asset.
Good communication, documentation and reporting skills.
Knowledge of computer software programmes.
