'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' vs. 'Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies'

The first trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is out, and so are the first pics of its low-budget rival Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is adapted from the book of the same name by that guy Seth Grahame-Smith (yes, he's the guy who wrote Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) who's really riding his one-trick pony to death by adding stupid horror elements to classic tales of literature and history. Hopefully, his undeserved success will end soon; but before that, we'll get to see the highly anticipated film version of his Lincoln tale. Benjamin Walker stars as the 16th president of the United States. Who hunts vampires:

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is directed by Timur Bekmambetov (he directed Night Watch, Day Watch, and Wanted) and will be in theaters on June 22nd, 2012.

Following closely on it's heels is The Asylum film Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies. This one stars Asylum fave Bill Oberst Jr. as the president, and Oberst himself describes the plot:

While the Civil War rages on, President Abraham Lincoln must undertake an even more daunting task; Destroying the Confederate Undead. "I think horror fans are a lot smarter than we are generally given credit for," says the actor. "Zombie fans will love it, of course, but so will those into alternate history, a big interest of mine; while battling the zombie scourge Lincoln encounters General Stonewall Jackson (Don McGraw), his old love Mary Owens (Baby Norman) and a young Teddy Roosevelt (Canon Kuipers) and every one of them is presented as they were in history. It's like an unknown chapter in a very kick-ass history book."

There's no trailer for the film yet, but you can check out these snazzy photos:

Confederate Undead. That reminds me a LOT of the short film Confederate Zombie Massacre by Devi Snively, which was made in 2005 and came out on DVD via Troma in 2007... I'm saying that's an uncanny coincidence. I just think that maybe if The Asylum is going to rip Snively off, they ought to have offered her the job of director on the film. Just sayin'.

Here's why I love that The Asylum made this:

1) Bill Oberst Jr. is a pretty awesome guy. I'm a little biased on this one; I can't email the people who star in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter because those people want to be a part of evil Hollywood, which means they have to sequester themselves from ordinary society and only speak to the public in fully orchestrated and controlled environments. Oberst, however, hasn't been sullied by the filth of Hollywood and will actually reply if you email him. He'll even come to your event if he's in town. I *like* watching a movie and knowing someone in the film. It makes me enjoy the film more. (Well, if I like the person, that is. No amount of "I went to high school with you" is going to make me enjoy a Maggie Gyllenhaal flick. No amount.)

2) I fucking love The Asylum. Look what they've done here; it's almost "meta" (in the real way, not the Scream 4 way). They've taken this horribly stupid movie that's being made for god-only-knows-how-many millions of dollars and deconstructed it and remade it for far, far less. They've changed the plot and title just enough to not get sued, but what they're basically saying is, "Hey, assholes in Hollywood: Your movie ideas are really fucking stupid. They're so stupid and you are so talentless that we're going to remake all your stupid movies with a low budget so the world can see just how stupid your movies really are when you strip away the giant budgets." I love that. I love that someone is willing to stick their middle finger right up in this movie's face because, COME ON, Abraham Lincoln killing vampires? You people got PAID for that? Go fuck yourselves.
