Al-Masri, also known as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, is thought to have taken over the leadership of al-Qaeda in Iraq after Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a US airstrike last June.

A suspected member of Al-Qaeda's north African branch has been indicted over his alleged role in a bloody 2008 attack which left 11 Mauritanian soldiers dead, a legal source said Monday. Seven suspected members of Al-Qaeda's North African wing have been arrested in the Mauritanian desert, a senior official in the security services told AFP on Monday. Mauritanian authorities have blamed a young Islamist extremist for a suicide bombing near the French embassy in the capital as France Sunday condemned the attack and pledged support to fight terrorism.
