Actors playing dual roles in the same movies are as old as the movies themselves. Since the days of silent films, costumes were used to disguise stars like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton so they could save money on paying other actors. Today, the practice survives, but rarely to save money. Today's films are more ambitious and, often, include storylines that include twins or clones or simply one actors playing two characters, like the old days.
