Most auto transmissions can be shifted manually but there is no advantage to be gained. If you put an auto trans in 1 it will stay in first gear until you move the shifter. If you put it in two when you start off it will start in first, shift to second and stay there until you move the shifter. If you put it in D it will start in 1 and shift itself through the gears until it reaches the highest gear. The main reason for 1 & 2 on the shift pattern is if you want better control at low speeds in snow or to hold the car back going down a steep grade.

There is a small gate about halfway down your shifter gates. When you’re in regular DRIVE (the GREEN “D5″), you have to push the shifter to the left. From there, your car starts out in 1st gear (or whatever gear your car is currently in, you can see this indicated as a single number 1-5 on your dashboard). Then you tap/nudge the shifter up or down to shift as desired.
