I got a chance to talk to MeKenna Melvin today who wanted to give us an insight into playing the daughter of Chuck’s resident bad-ass, John Casey (Adam Baldwin). After first appearing in the Season 3 episode “Chuck Vs. the Tic-Tac”, her character has slowly began to evolve and start a relationship with Casey and as recently as Season 4′s second episode, “Chuck vs. The Suitcase” she has been off the screen talking to Morgan while calling her father any chance she gets.
Getting to know her character Alex McHugh, is going to be essential to understanding one of the newest characters to the world of Chuck but also someone who will contribute to a lot of growth in the characters of Morgan (Joshua Gomez) and Casey.
When talking to Melvin, who plays Alex on the series, you got the sense of how much fun she has playing this character and for the opportunity to work with such a cool cast at Chuck.
“Its amazing, I am so lucky to have this opportunity to work with Adam, I mean he is so cool and just an awesome guy to be around…the whole cast really is. Joshua and Zach are also just fun, its like a big family.”
She mentioned to me that she has had so much fun working with Zach and Josh because they make you feel right at home.
“They really do, I mean Zach came up to me my first day and introduced himself, he was so nice, he obviously did his homework but he knew all about me. It was cool. Josh and I have jokes too, he is hilarious. My jokes are usually beard jokes.”
Melvin is someone who knows about family, being very close to hers, and tells me that Alex is all about it too in her episodes on Chuck. She tells me that there is currently 3 full episodes this season with the presence of Alex but she hopes there may be more.
“When you see Alex again [Chuck vs. the Coup d'Etat - Episode 4 - October 18, 2010], she is not someone you’d think would be hesitating to meet her father, she is open to it. She has a resolve in wanting to build a relationship with her dad and as someone like me who is really close with her father its neat to play that and be that character on screen.”
One of the most interesting things about Mekenna as well and something I think that makes her perfect for the role of John Casey’s daughter is that she has in fact an upbringing in martial arts.
“I have been a first degree black belt since I was 10 and if I could add that to my character Alex oneday that would be cool, after all Casey isn’t going to have a daughter who can’t defend herself. We did see a little physical stuff when I beat the guy up in the last season…so hopefully Chris Fedak will take notice.”
Mekenna is the daughter of a drama teacher and a theater director so acting is something she has always wanted to do. This prompted her to hit New York and study her craft at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, she also spent some time overseas at the British American Drama Academy in Oxford. Her first role in television was on the first season of Fox’s hit show, Lie to Me.
“My first role was on Lie to Me Season 1, “A Perfect Score”. Oh man what an opportunity. I mean working with someone of the pedigree of Tim Roth was so awesome! I mean is such a tremendous actor and person. It was cool.”
All in all, Mekenna is a pretty cool chick and we thank her for stopping by the site to tell us about her character Alex, sharing her stories from the set and what is in store with her on Chuck this upcoming Season 4. She certainly has a bright career ahead of her and we will be watching her closely.
Also, Mekenna has embraced the blogosphere and Chuck fans, embracing her can can follow Mekenna on Twitter and read more on her past work at IMDB, plus you they can check out her website too.
