Some families open one present on Christmas Eve, some go caroling, and others escape to the movie theater to avoid all of the holiday hullabaloo.
And some families, like the ones on Seinfeld and The O.C., make up their very own wacky alternative holidays. But only one fake TV holiday can emerge victorious. So sing it with us now!
On the second day of Tube-Mas my true love gave to me...
2 Fake TV Holidays: Festivus vs. Chrismukkah
Origins
Festivus: Most people think that Festivus was invented by the TV show Seinfeld, but that's only sorta true. The fake holiday was actually created in 1966 by Seinfeld writer Daniel O'Keefe's dad, who used Festivus to celebrate his first date with his future wife Deborah. O'Keefe then tweaked the holiday for a 1997 episode of Seinfeld, in which Frank Costanza (Jerry Stiller) introduces Festivus to Kramer (Michael Richards).
Chrismukkah: Seth Cohen (Adam Brody) grew up with a Christian mother and a Jewish father, so when he was six years old he created his own special mash-up of Christmas and Hanukkah. According to Seth, Chrismukkah is awesome because it involves "eight days of presents, followed by one day of many presents." The rest of The O.C. gang adopted the holiday and celebrated it every season.
Traditions
Festivus: Instead of a tree, Festivus is celebrated on December 23 with a pole ("It requires no decoration. I find tinsel distracting...It's made from aluminum. Very high strength-to-weight ratio."). The holiday also involves the Airing of Grievances over dinner, in which guests say how each person at the table has disappointed them over the past year, followed by Feats of Strength, in which the head of the household must be wrestled to the ground.
Chrismukkah: Chrismukkah pulls from both Christmas and Jewish holiday traditions. There's a menorah and a tree, of course. And on Christmas the Cohen family spends the day eating Chinese food and watching movies like Fiddler on the Roof and It's a Wonderful Life. But the most important Chrismukkah tradition is the Yarmuclaus, which is a yarmukle that looks like a Santa hat.
Catchphrase Festivus: "Festivus for the rest of us!"
Chrismukkah: "You can't ruin Chrismukkah. It's got twice the resistance of any normal holiday."
Verdict
In the spirit of the season, we'll call this battle between Festivus and Chrismukkah a tie. But both fake holidays better watch their backs, because 30 Rock's Ludachristmas, which involves music, a Horny Santa, "The Human Table," and lots and lots of alcohol, has thrown its Santa hat into the fake TV holiday ring. Game on Festivus and Chrismukkah, GAME ON.
