Ok, the title of this might be a tad bit extreme. However, it is not far enough. For about the 50th time this season, Adam Dunn has done nothing to help the White Sox win a game. His three strikeouts tonight add to his league total, and the Sox continue to stay stuck a couple games below .500. If Paul Konerko was healthy enough to play first base, this wouldn’t be an issue. However, Dunn is needed to play first base.
Instead of Dunn, I want Brent Lillibridge to play first. Lillibridge might be the tiniest first baseman in MLB history, but at least he can move on defense. He also isn’t a walking strikeout. Lilly has almost as many home runs this year as Dunn. He’s done in it in roughly one-third the amount of at-bats. Not only is that comical, but it’s sad on the part of Dunn.
Maybe he will work out in the off-season for once. Dunn is noted for not worrying about hitting until he returns to spring training. That approach needs to be abandoned. Dunn joined a different league for the first time. He should’ve prepped better. He might be losing a bit of bat speed, but he shouldn’t be this bad.
Once PK gets healthy, this is what I want done (no pun intended). Release Omar Vizquel. I admire Omar for still playing into his 40s, but the writing is on the wall. His range has evaporated at short, and he can’t really hit anymore. I think Alexei can handle the rest of the games at short. If not, play Beckham there in an emergency. He did play there in college. After that, call up Dayan Viciedo. The Cuban Pimp as I call him needs at bats. Play him at DH when PK is in the field. Take advantage of his tremendous bat. Put Dunn on the bench, unless he has an extreme advantage. That means he doesn’t face lefties and he only plays when he has a successful track record against the opposing pitcher.
If you add Viciedo’s bat in with the resurgence of Alex Rios, this team has plenty of offense now. Carlos Quentin is on another Q streak, as he just missed three home runs tonight. PK is going to hit regardless, Brent Morel is hitting frozen ropes, and AJ is ripping the ball into gaps.
No matter what, Dunn needs to be on the bench. He’s embarrassing himself and the team. His desperate attempt to say he foul tipped a ball on his third strikeout was pathetic. He missed by about a foot. This was a key at-bat, considering the Sox had the go-ahead run at second. Dunn was the big money signing this off-season, but I won’t be upset if he uses his money for a seat cushion on the bench of the rest of the way.
