Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis was sidelined in Sunday's game after taking a blow to the head from Atlanta Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud. Portis left the game with 3:20 remaining in the first quarter after a helmet-to-helmet hit from DeCoud. The Redskins said Portis suffered a head injury and would not return.  

The Atlanta Falcons are without backup running backs Jerious Norwood and Jason Snelling against the Washington Redskins. Norwood (hip) missed his third straight game and Snelling (hamstring) is inactive for the second straight week, cutting into the Falcons' depth behind running back Michael Turner.

The Washington Redskins have already gone through their share of denial, anger, bargaining and depression, at least in a football sense. They're now reaching the final stage of grief over a losing season: acceptance. Slowly but surely, the Redskins (2-6) this week began to deal with the fact that the season is going nowhere.  

A fresh, new NFL head coach has his team off to a 6-2 start. Sure, there have been some bumps along the way, but most everyone is pleasantly surprised with a record that's better than anyone would have predicted. Sound familiar, Jim Zorn? "We were 6-2 last year at our start, and yet it's very difficult," Zorn said.  

The Washington Redskins are shuffling their lineup again after losing their strong safety and right tackle to multiweek injuries. In addition, Clinton Portis is recovering from a concussion and is doubtful to play in next week's game against Denver. Safety Chris Horton damaged a ligament in his left big toe during Sunday's 31-17 loss to Atlanta.  

Still feeling the effects of a concussion, Redskins running back Clinton Portis was hardly his vivacious, loquacious self when he met with coach Jim Zorn on Wednesday and probably will miss this weekend's game against the Denver Broncos. "I don't want to rule him out, but it's very doubtful that he's going to play," Zorn said.  

Using the most basic fact, the argument could be made that Washington is playing better than any other team in the NFC East right now. Yes, those 3-6 Redskins without Clinton Portis. Better even than the division-leading Dallas Cowboys, who they play Sunday in the 99th game of their ever-bitter rivalry.  

The Washington Redskins had no trouble holding onto a fourth-quarter lead against JaMarcus Russell and the Oakland Raiders. Jason Campbell threw two touchdown passes to give Washington the lead, and Quinton Ganther put it away by running for two fourth-quarter scores in the Redskins' 34-13 victory Sunday.  

With three games remaining in the regular season, the Washington Redskins find themselves in the thick of the NFC East playoff race. Of course, that's only because their next two opponents are the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys, both at home and in prime time. "I'd love to be the Grinch on their Christmas," rookie linebacker Brian Orakpo said Monday.

Kicker Shaun Suisham hasn't cost the Washington Redskins nearly as many points as free safety LaRon Landry, yet it is Suisham who found himself unemployed this week in the fallout from after another tough loss. Coach Jim Zorn declined to call Suisham the "scapegoat" Wednesday -- "I would never use that word" -- for the 33-30 overtime loss to New Orleans, but the Redskins...  

Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth will miss his third game in four weeks with a sprained left ankle when the Washington Redskins visit the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Also, cornerback DeAngelo Hall will be sidelined again with a sprained right knee, denying him a chance to face his old team. Both players were ruled out by coach Jim Zorn on Friday.  

Three times this season, the Oakland Raiders have taken the field the week after a win full of confidence, only to end up on the wrong end of a lopsided score. There was the 23-3 loss to Denver the week after a win in Kansas City. A 38-0 debacle against the New York Jets following an upset against Philadelphia.  

With a winning season no longer possible, even Jim Zorn could use a motivational kick in the pants. Or, as he put it: "I'm trying not to lose heart." The Washington Redskins coach held the sort of news conference Monday that is commonplace throughout the league this time of year. He's resigned to the fact that the team won't accomplish its goals this season, but he's proud...  

The Washington Redskins' wait-and-see class of sophomore second-rounders finally had a game worth seeing. Receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly and tight end Fred Davis combined for 10 catches for 139 yards and one touchdown in the 27-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
