hi m a newbie in dslr world just wnt 2 ask what does 18-55mm lens mean? ?
Answer by Box of Arturo Fuente Cigars
It’s the minimum and maximum focal length on a zoom lens.
Depending on the size of your sensor 18mm is normal wide or ultra-wide. 55mm is slightly telephoto or normal. The lens can also be set to any focal length in between.

Box is correct. Also pay attention to the fstop. It’s a very important characteristic of a lense if you want to use your camera to it’s full ablity and become a good photographer. You pay for that F though. The lense you are talking about is probably a kit lense. It’s nothing extraordinary but it’s a great started lense. Have fun!!
50mm is considered “normal” because it views the subject area at approximately the same angle as the eye. But magnification wise the human eye is closer to 85mm. That’s what I read once atleast.

Additional note: because digital cameras and their sensors work differently than film, there’s a multiplier that factors into the conversion between a digital lens and what its film equivalent would be. Depending on the camera, it’s usually around 1.5x.
So an 18mm lens on a digital SLR would be the equivalent of a 27mm lens on a film camera. As such, an 18-55 in the film world would be 27-82 in the film world. Looking through a 50mm lens on a film camera you’d get the same field of view as looking through a 33mm lens on a DSLR.
50mm is considered “normal” for reasons which escape me.
