The Free Trade Agreement Remains on Ice - And Time Is Running Out

Bush continues to push for the approval of the bilateral Free Trade Agreement between Panama and the United States, "the destiny of that agreement depends on Panama, not on the United States." Time is running out and Panama should not waste it, said Padilla, talking about the possibility of Pedro Miguel González continuing as the President of the Panamanian National Assembly until the end of his term in September, when Washington will be in the final stages of the campaigning for the national elections in November. "In September the Congress will be in session for a few weeks, and then will be in recess until January 2009 when the next congress is sworn in," said Padilla. The political climate is unpredictable after November, he added. Those asked in an opinion poll think González should step down - 53.6% of Panamanians think Pedro Miguel González should resign from his position as the President of the National Assembly. El subsecretario de Comercio de EU dice que el tiempo apremia y Panamá no debe desperdiciarlo. El funcionario señala que es imposible predecir el clima político que habrá en su país después de noviembre.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Christopher Padilla, subsecretario de Comercio de Estados Unidos, afirmó ayer que, aunque el gobierno de George W. Bush sigue comprometido con aprobar el tratado de promoción comercial (TPC) con Panamá, "el destino de ese acuerdo depende de Panamá, no de Estados Unidos".

El tiempo apremia y Panamá no debe desperdiciarlo, advirtió Padilla, refiriéndose a la posibilidad de que Pedro Miguel González siga como presidente de la Asamblea hasta que concluya su periodo en septiembre, cuando Washington estará en la etapa final de su campaña presidencial. "En septiembre, el Congreso sesionará por unas semanas, y en enero de 2009 habrá uno nuevo", dijo Padilla. Es impredecible el clima político después de noviembre, agregó.

El 53.6% de los panameños piensa que Pedro Miguel González debe renunciar como presidente de la Asamblea Nacional. Así lo revela una encuesta encargada por este diario a la firma Dichter & Neira aplicada entre el 15 y el 17 de febrero pasado a mil 200 personas.

Además, el 51.3% considera que ha habido un distanciamiento entre el Órgano Ejecutivo y el Legislativo a raíz de la elección de González, en septiembre de 2007.

González dijo que si el tratado comercial con Estados Unidos se ponía en riesgo, él dejaría el cargo.
