According to Wikipedia.org: Afganistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country at the crossroads of Asia and the Middle East. Generally considered a part of Central Asia, it is sometimes ascribed to a regional bloc in either South Asia or the Middle East, as it has religious, ethno-linguistic, and geographic links with most of its neighbours. The name Afghanistan means the "Land of Afghans ".

The embattled Afghan president pledged Sunday that there would be no place for corrupt officials in his new administration — a demand made by Washington and its international partners as they ponder sending more troops to confront the Taliban and shore up his government. Also Sunday, NATO reported three more coalition soldiers — one American and two Britons — died in combat with the Taliban in western and southern areas. The latest losses pushed Britain's combat death toll in the eight-year Afghan war to 201. NATO forces said they were still searching for two American paratroopers who disappeared Wednesday while trying to recover airdropped ... Read Full Story

Investigations were under way Sunday into the deaths of seven soldiers and police killed in what Afghan officials called a mis-targeted NATO air strike, one of the worst "friendly fire" incidents of an eight-year war. It occurred while NATO and Afghan forces, searching for two missing American paratroopers in a barren, rugged area, clashed with Taliban insurgents on Friday, they said. "The investigation continues," defence ministry spokesman General Mohammad Zahir Azimi told AFP. "We and NATO are investigating the incident." Azimi said four army soldiers and three police officers were killed in the air strike which was called in to help troops fighting rebels ... Read Full Story

With Hamid Karzai confirmed as Afghan president for another five years, the pressure is on Barack Obama to declare his plans for winning a war which commanders say is in danger of being lost. Top aides have said it would be "irresponsible" for the US president to take a decision on committing tens of thousands more troops to battle the Taliban before it was clear who would be in power in Kabul. Stanley McChrystal, the US general with overall command of the more than 100,000 troops already in Afghanistan, wants up to 40,000 reinforcements -- a line strongly backed by his senior lieutenants. But ... Read Full Story
KABUL (Reuters) - The Taliban denied on Sunday they were holding the bodies of two U.S. soldiers who had gone missing last week in northwestern Afghanistan after earlier claiming they had recovered the two dead servicemen. The disappearance of the two paratroopers from U.S. 82nd Airborne Division during a resupply mission on Wednesday, triggered a search by NATO and Afghan forces of Badghis province, near the border with Turkmenistan. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told Reuters by telephone the Islamist militant group had not retrieved the bodies of soldiers whom they say drowned in Badghis. Provincial officials also believe the missing Americans have drowned. On ... Read Full Story
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama is wrapping up deliberations on war strategy in Afghanistan and is considering final Pentagon options that include sending about 30,000 more troops, officials said on Saturday. A deployment of that size would be less than the 40,000-troop increase recommended by Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, but more than many of Obama's Democratic allies may support. Record combat deaths have eroded U.S. public support for the war, and a decision to expand troop levels could become a political liability for the president ahead of congressional elections next year. Currently, there are ... Read Full Story
