I focused in on the Democratic Presidential Debate last night. I think I was again surprised at the amount of mudslinging against each other and President Bush. I felt that the Presidential candidates, Democrat and Republican, knew that the American people would like more of a bipartisan run government. However, the Democratic candidates couldn't even get along with each other. And sure, most of these debates are for show to familiarize the American people, but I felt like a little kid - give us some credit Washington.
With all of this being said, in all the debates, I have not heard any talk about the issues plaguing countries in Africa. I understand we're at war and Pakistan is threatening our ties with them. But when you're a world power, don't we have an interest in these issues as well? I felt that the genocide occurring in Darfur would have at least grabbed some attention and then everyone is talking about ending the war and pulling troops out. But we have troops stationed around Somalia because an Islamist group is threatening to take power there and the US feels that their terrorists. Will those troops be pulled also?
I feel that since we have no vested interest in any part of Africa, Washington can ignore these basic human rights issues. This is a government that is allowing it's private citizens to take care of the "Africa Problem" like Oprah and U2 and countless other celebrities. So I ask, the corrupt leaders of most countries of Africa are not as important as Hussein and Hitler and many of the other leaders we have either de-throned or pressured out of office? Or is it that the American people really don't care and aren't bringing the issue to the forefront?
