Andrew Filev asked on his Blog awhile back, "what Project Management books should you read?" This is a good question for all project managers. But I have difficulty with the books he listed. Which may be my same difficulty with grasping the notion of PM 2.0 paradigm. His first "book" PMBOK ® is not a "book" about project management in the sense of the books listed below. The PMBOK ® speaks its name. It is a Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge . The Knowledge Areas (Integration, Scope, Time, Cost, Quality, HR, Communications, Risk, and Procurement) and Process Groups (Initiating, Planning, Executing, ... Read Full Story

I've read countless articles about the changing role of the tester within an agile environment. Most suggest the analytical skills of a tester should be used more to help define user story requirements. I've even read elsewhere that testers should become more technical and fix defects as and when they find them! However, there are some hidden qualities testers posses that agile development can utilise and benefit from even more. Let me explain... Most roles within scrum are clearly defined: product owners, developers and even testers etc..., but what about the role of scrum master ? Without a dedicated project manager stepping into the ... A great primer for those trying to better understand Scrum and a useful case study based aid for those currently practicing. For the former this book provides a solid foundation for Scrum terminology, practices, and value. Through consistent utilization of real-life case studies in a variety of environments, the author is able to show how Scrum was implemented to reap business and IT value while also showing some stumbles along the way. These case studies will be of particular importance to the latter group mentioned above as the specifics can either help to get your implementation "un-stuck" or at least provide some thought around ... We’re happy to announce that we are live with a huge update to scrum’d. We took in all the feedback from our users, and after having used scrum’d ourselves for a number of months, we knew there were some things that needed changing. So, here’s all the goodies in this update. Product Backlog The first thing we did is move the product backlog to it’s own tab. With the product backlog being located on the project planning page, it was too small to work with, especially for larger projects. Also, we made the expand and collapse links show and hide the acceptance criteria. We ... Read Full Story

When I encounter people who are skeptical about agile software development, one of the common concerns I hear is about the lack of planning and design in advance. How can we create software with a coherent design when we don't "really" design? I commented on this concern a while back when mused about reactive planning in AI and software. Reading last week, I ran across a passage from Lewis Mumford's book "The City in History" that...
