Aidan Coleman must be wondering what he has done to upset the Grand National gods. After spurning Mon Mome, who went on to win the race 12 months ago, Coleman's prospects of riding that horse in tomorrow's renewal were threatened by a tumble at Aintree yesterday.
Coleman was referred to Fazakerley Hospital after he was unseated from Double Handful and kicked by passing horses in the Matalan Novices' Hurdle. He was plainly uncomfortable as he was helped into the ambulance. Although abdominal and shoulder injuries were suspected, he was quickly discharged.
The jockey was taken aback to be handed a bus ticket by hospital staff, but a car was dispatched to return him to the racecourse. He will have to pass the racecourse doctor if he plans to ride today, but the signs are encouraging.
No one is more anxious for him to be declared fit than Venetia Williams, who trains Mon Mome and spent two difficult hours awaiting news of her stable jockey's condition. Williams's heart sank when she heard that Coleman was feared to have sustained internal damage.
Similar injuries were responsible for the death of Richard Davis, who was allied to the Williams stable when he suffered a fatal fall at Southwell 14 years ago. “You can imagine how relieved I was that Aidan had been discharged,” Williams said. “Aidan will have every chance to ride Mon Mome. After what happened last year, I'd give anything to see him on the horse.”
The last Grand National riding arrangements saw Nina Carberry booked to ride Character Building, who was bought by the Thompson family this week, while Tony McCoy prefers Don't Push It to Can't Buy Time. “In the end it was a toss of the coin,” said the jockey, who has yet to ride a Grand National winner.
