During sentencing, Judge Kimberly M. Esmond Adams said that it was Michael's flight from the scene of the accident that caused her to issue such a long prison sentence. Five people died in the wreck when Michael's BMW forced a Mercedes to spin into traffic, hitting a Volkwagen. A family of four passed away in the Mercedes, while a young girl died in the Volkswagen.

Michael, with the help of her mother (who was sentecned to 8 years for helping cover-up the crime), then had her BMW repaired. Police eventually located the car, with new body work and smelling of fresh paint, in her driveway. In the ashtray, they found the remains of a marijuana cigar with Michael's DNA on it.

"I want to say that I have wronged," said Aimee Michael to the judge. "I have wronged three families and for that I am sorry."
