VANCOUVER, B.C. – When the Vancouver Whitecaps traded left fullback Alain Rochat to D.C. United on Thursday, the biggest winner was Jordan Harvey.
Of course, the Californian is more diplomatic than to publicly confess his happiness at the Swiss-Canadian’s departure, but this opens a door for Harvey to play a lot more than he has this season, generally having to make due with minutes as a substitute or as a replacement when Rochat was unavailable or used in midfield.

The Vancouver Whitecaps have dealt the versatile Alain Rochat to D.C. United for a pair of draft picks.
The move not only bought Vancouver a second-round pick in 2015 and a conditional pick in 2016, but cleared up Rochat’s $190,000-per-week salary and opened up a roster spot.
Rochat, a natural left-back, had lost his spot to Jonathan Harvey. Vancouver has experimented with him in the midfield and at central defense a few months before being moved.

WASHINGTON (AP) — D.C. United acquired defender-midfielder Alain Rochat from the Vancouver Whitecaps on Thursday for a 2015 second-round draft pick and a conditional pick in 2016.
Rochat was in his third season with the Whitecaps. He has played in 12 MLS games this season, including 11 starts.
The 30-year-old Rochat was born in Canada but grew up in Switzerland and has played for the Swiss national team.
