Alan Cumming's confession over Green Goblin role in Spider-Man musical

BEST known to superhero fans for his excellent portrayal of the blue-skinned teleporting mutant Nightcrawler in X-Men 2, Scottish actor Alan Cumming returns to the genre for the Spider-Man musical on Broadway.

Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark, with music by U2, has a budget reportedly reaching $45million and recently ran into cash flow problems. Work had stopped on building the sets, but is now resuming, according to Variety.

Alan Cumming will play Spider-Man's arch-nemesis Green Goblin, but he has revealed he had no serious desire to play that part and didn't even know the character beforehand.

He told The Stage: "I'm not exactly burning to play the Green Goblin and I don't know the Spider-Man oeuvre - I've not seen any of the films.

"But I was really fascinated by the script and it's a great role, and it's not as if I'm carrying the whole thing, which is nice.

"The last few things I've done on Broadway have been pretty intense so I'm actually enjoying the fact that I won't be the person who has to be on in every scene."

Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark swings in to the Hilton Theatre with previews beginning on February 25 ahead of an official opening in March.
