The President and CEO of Ford Motor Company, Mr. Alan Mulally is positive about its new ‘One Ford’ platform strategy and considers India an important market for small cars. The company has tightened its belts to become competitive enough to survive in the Indian automotive industry.
Mr. Alan Mulally is of the opinion that India is important to the company as the vehicles offered like Figo, Fiesta and small SUVs are of global standard in sizes, while the vehicle sizes required in India are like the substitute of the vehicle sizes throughout the world. Thus, the company is focussing more on investing on smaller vehicles to balance its product portfolio globally. This is also one of the reasons, why the company keeps India in mind while developing any small car.
Thus, the company is planning to have more B and C segment vehicles developed on global platform. This will keep 70-80% of the parts of the developed vehicle as the same around the globe with just 20% of customisation based on the likings of the customers of that region or nation. These vehicles will be available around the world sporting all the world-class features customers want at more affordable price.
On the supply chain of the company in India, Mr. Mulally said that the company mostly sources parts from where it operates and the company expects a significant growth in the supply base in India. The company is investing heavily in India to strengthen its supply base and the plants. For instance, the company has hopes from the Gujarat facility for better production capacity as well as the strong supplier base. The company’s EcoSport is the first global platform vehicle introduced in India, which is also expected to bring global supplier base with it. This will further help in gaining grounds for the other new launches to come.
The CEO, Ford Motor Company, Mr. Alan Mulally also said that their position in India will become more competitive as the company is bringing in adequate number of great vehicles in the country. He pointed on the Fiesta and then the EcoSport as the small cars based on their global platform strategy. He said that the EcoSport is developed keeping in mind the South American and Indian market, which can be upgraded adding more features to bring it up, further making it more tough to bring it down.
Therefore, the company says that with its ‘One Ford’ plan it can deliver a well equipped car they wish for, at an affordable price. Moreover, the company also feels that this plan will very well work for Indian market.
