James Mitchell, who played Palmer Cortlandt, dies at the age of 89.
James Mitchell who portrayed the character of Palmer Cortlandt in All My Children had died on Friday in a Los Angeles Hospital. The news of James Mitchell’s death was released by his partner Albert Wolsky. The actor had been suffering with heart diseases for many years. Recently, his health conditions complicated due to an attack of pneumonia.
James Mitchell had been portraying the very popular Palmer Cortlandt for last many years in the infamous soap of ABC titled ‘All My Children’. James Mitchell’s final appearance as Palmer Cortlandt was on the 40th anniversary episode of the soap earlier this month.
James Mitchell was born in Sacramento in 1920 and had received a degree in theater from Los Angeles City College. He had remained a Broadway actor for many years and had portrayed several leading roles in various Broadway plays.
James Mitchell loved dancing and had even joined American Ballet Theater in a world tour. Mitchell had also taught dancing at Yale and Drake University.
James Mitchell has remained a leading star of ‘All My Children’ where he had been portraying the Palmer Cortlandt, a wealthy member of the Cortlandt family. Albert Wolsky remembered his partner’s long-running character of Palmer Cortlandt and mentioned that he loved playing the role of villain.
The fictional character of Palmer Cortlandt had remained a mainstay for a long time but the producers had to step it down from the show because of Mitchell’s poor health conditions.
James Mitchell had been nominated for ‘Lead Actor in a Drama Series’ for seven times in Daytime Emmy Award for his portrayal of Palmer Cortlandt.
