Advair HFA inhaler or Albuterol inhaler for Asthma?
You seem to be confused about the indications for both medications.
Advair is what we in the field call “maintenance” drug. It means that it is not indicated for acute bronchospasm. It contains a steroid which is aimed towards treating the inflammation portion of asthma. It should only be given once every 12 hours, and never used as a rescue inhaler. Doctors prescribe Advair to better manage asthma, so I don’t think he was a moron in prescribing it.
It could also be that her symptoms are because of something unrelated to her taking Advair.
Whatever the case may be, if the vomiting does not stop she should be taken to the ER to prevent dehydration like you mentioned.YouAskIAnswer has a very good answer. I would like to add that Asthma Educators call albuterol a “rescue” inhaler. It is for those times you are having an attack or episode of shortness of breath.
Advair is a controller medication. Designed for prevention of attacks.
According to current guidelines, every asthmatic should have a albuterol inhaler with them at all times. If you use your albuterol more then 2 times per week (during the day) or two time during night per month, you asthma is not in control and you need a controller medication. Advair is one controller medication that you can use WITH albuterol, not instead of.
This information should be on your written action plan.
Advair may have the most side effects you have seen but it also is the fast selling medication in the history of modern pharmaceutical sales. Millions of people in the US use it twice a day.I use Advair twice per day and it’s been a lifesaver for me. As stated in the other answers, the two meds you are talking about are for different things. Albuterol is for acute attacks, a quick relief. Advair is a asthma maintenance drug and usually keeps asthma at bay, so a rescue inhaler isn’t used as often, if at all.
