Edmonton Oilers’ defenceman Ladislav Smid has never been thought of as an offensive defenceman, but his 3 goals this season are another reason for people to take note. There is of course also Smid’s (at times) league leading number of blocked shots and team leading number of hits to discuss, but goals from a stay at home defenceman are what doesn’t quite fit the trend.

The Edmonton Oilers certainly had a hot streak to start the 2011-12 season, but of course the team isn’t ready to keep up that kind of pace. With injuries and the numbers achieved by the goaltending duo coming back down to Earth, few Oilers maintained their offensive streaks. For example Sam Gagner went ICE cold and Ales Hemsky didn’t actually get going until the second half of the season.
