With the Olympics winding down, the athletes need to find a way to build their brand and extend their fifteen minutes of fame, because there's no guarantee they'll be around for the Rio Games in 2016. Luckily, the Olympics have been a feeder system for one of the most popular television shows in U.S. — Dancing with the Stars.
Olympians like Hope Solo, Apolo Anton Ohno, and Natalie Coughlin have all tango-ed their way through across the DWTS stage, and now Michael Phelps is in the running for next season. Having swum his last Olympic race, Phelps responded to a potential turn on the dance competition show. "I haven't really been known for my dancing. I know everyone who's done it — I've talked to Apolo and Natalie about it, and they said they've enjoyed it and had a blast," Phelps told US Weekly. "I won't say I'm ruling anything out. Who knows?
If Phelps does sign up to boogie down on national TV, his Olympic pedigree bodes well for his title chances. Former gold medalists Shawn Johnson, Kristi Yamaguchi, and Apolo Ohno have all walked away from the show as dancing champions. As for the Dancing with the Stars producers, why stop at Phelps? Plenty of athletes from this year's Games would make great contestants on the show. Which leads us to this question: Who do you want to see foxtrot their way to the disco ball trophy?
Speaking of Olympians' transition from the Games to the entertainment industry, our poll earlier this week asked which athlete would make the best Hollywood star. Zimbio readers though gymnast Gabby Douglas would be a natural fit on the big screen. Does that mean Douglas will win again in the DWTS poll? Vote and find out.
