Alexa Havins joined ‘Doctor Who’ spinoff at urging of fanboy husband
Starz Alexa Havins plays buttoned-down CIA assistant Esther Drummond in Starz's 'Torchwood.' After Alexa Havins and her husband, Justin Bruening , had their first child last August — Lexington , a girl — Havins figured she'd take a break from a fairly busy acting career "and just have some mommy time." But the acting biz shows very little respect for plans, even simple ones. One phone call, says Havins, "can change everything." This phone call came from the producers of "Torchwood: Miracle Day," a sci-fi series about a mysterious British institute that seems to be somehow involved with a crisis that threatens Earth. The crisis is that no one is dying, which at first may sound like the good news but is really the bad news. People still get sick and suffer terrible, normally terminal, illnesses. They just have no release. In addition, this sudden presence of "extra" people threatens to deplete the planet's resources. A spinoff from the BBC classic " Doctor Who ," "Torchwood" is entering its fourth season on the BBC. But this year, in an unusual arrangement, the U.S. network Starz has become a partner and will start running it here next Friday (10 p.m.) as a new, 10-part stand-alone series. You might call it a transatlantic simulcast. Whatever you call it, much of the action in the show shifts from Britain to the U.S., so naturally it needs some American characters. This includes Rex Matheson ( Mekhi Phifer ), a manic, highly skilled loose cannon of a CIA agent, and Esther Drummond , his buttoned-down assistant, who is much more comfortable with computers than with guns and grilling mysterious perps. Esther is where Havins comes in. She got the call asking if she'd be interested in the role, and at first she wasn't sure. The mommy thing and all.
