65th TONY AWARDS 2011
THE BEST & WORST !!The Shanghai Film Festival wasn't the only event that happened over this weekend - on Sunday evening, it was the turn of the 65th Tony Awards, held at the Beacon Theater in New York City...
THE BEST DRESSEDThis certainly wasn't a massive event, but there were still ten really great dresses nonetheless...
ALEXA-RAY JOELAlexa-Ray is, of course, the daughter of Christy Brinkley and Billy Joel...

Now, here's something we really don't see very much of - and that's the matching wrap !! Why is that ? I really don't know, because I have one that matches my greeny-grey evening dress and it's
invaluable for keeping the chilly night air at bay...( see my facebook photo )
I liked her black dress very much, particularly for the sparkly V-shaped halter-neck strap, which gave it a nice out of the ordinary touch !!
ANIKA NONI ROSEI love Anika's look here - she really looks lovely !! White and cream dresses are just as versatile as black, in terms of being able to wear them just about anywhere - and they are also just as flattering to pretty much anybody !! This halter-necked style is the supreme flatterer
par excellence...

I also liked the orchid decoration in her hair and also the amazing Art Deco clutch...
CATHERINE ZETA JONESCatherine didn't walk the red carpet for some reason, but instead opted for an uncomplicated appearance presenting an award, dressed in a truly beautiful dress, designed by Elie Saab...

Doesn't she look
sensational ?!! Apparently, she had this dress made, I believe - so that rules out the possibility of me predicting it in the first place - still, never mind - it's worth it to see someone like Catherine in such a gorgeous dress...
CHRISTY BRINKLEY
Well, we've seen her daughter, and now here is - the woman herself - Christy Brinkley, looking
truly amazing for her age...

This looks amazing !! She doesn't look a day over thirty, but she is, in actual fact, no less than
57 !! Neither does she look like she has had any work done...
Her turquoise dress was fab - I liked it a lot, especially the sparkly bodice - it was eye-catching and suited her colouring perfectly !! The huge bow on her bum is a humourously quirky touch...
She gets a gold star for looking fabulous and fun !!
ELLEN BARKINEllen chose this L'Wren Scott design which was custom-made for her...it suits her admirably well, I must say...

When you get to a certain age, you may prefer not to show off certain bits of your body, and your upper arms are one area that is often not so good, so lace sleeves are a really good option !! It makes a much sexier change from sporting a wrap, which is often suggested, by me and many other fashionistas. However, you don't always want to be carrying something like that, especially not if you have to go up on stage to collect an award like Ellen here !!
I like the immensely flattering and slightly draped V-neck-line, which is low enough to be sexy without revealing too much cleavage !!
KATIE FINNERANKatie has dark red hair, so this wouldn't be the first colour I'd choose myself - however she does look great in it !! The shape of this is beautiful in rather a Grecian way...

I would have preferred a pinker lipstick - the one she is wearing is quite coral in tone which is great for her hair but not so great for the dress...still, never mind, she looks good anyway - I do like her little pink flower hair-clip.
PATINA MILLERHere's an older design by Naeem Khan - from his Autumn 2008 collection, it gets an airing worn by Patina here...

Like Paz Vega's dress at the Shanghai Film Festival opening ceremony the evening before, this dress adheres to the best practice design rule that if a dress is so low-backed that you can almost see the lady's
derrière, then you should really make the front high-necked and give it some sleeves, preferably long ones...
This is generally a good rule - and it certainly works well here...it means you can show some skin without looking tarty !!
TAMMY BLANCHARDTammy chose this beautiful deep blue sequinned dress designed by Georges Chakra from his Editions range for next Autumn...

This is a gorgeous design actually - I love the fact that it drops down into a draped cowl in the front,
and a deeper one in the back too - as you can see, there is only one way you can do that without the whole neckline collapsing down around her shoulders, and that is by giving it a strap across the back of the neck to keep the two shoulders in the right place...
Fabulous look...
VICTORIA CLARKI rather liked this dress too - I don't know who designed this, but I love the ruffled neckline...the fact that the ruffles are all edged in a contrasting colour really delineates them beautifully !!

Everything else is really simple - no clutch, and just a black and gold watch and a pair of swirly earrings under her hair...that's all !! A pendant necklace wouldn't have been too much here I think, but she looks great in this anyway !!
VIOLA DAVISViola looked great as she always does - she always seems to get into my Best Dressed list at these events, and that's because she always chooses designs that really suit her without being too complicated or fussy, and she never overdoes things with the jewellery or accessories either !!

I love her sassy short haircut, and the fact that she has kept both shoes and bag to plain black...
WORST DRESSEDThere was really only one person who really took the biscuit for her crazy clothes choices here...
WHOOPI GOLDBERGI mean - what was she thinking ?!! What's with the whacky hat ?!!...

I mean - I do get that Whoopi resolutely follows her own fashion path and wears what suits her rather than what's in fashion, which admirable and definitely the way to go, but there are times when she just looks mad...
Actually, the dress and matching coat are gorgeous - very Arts & Crafts in design, and very Pre-Raphaelite in their fabrics too - an easy shape with luxurious velvet edgings all down the front...but why, oh why, spoil the effect of all that luxury with a mis-matched hat and an unnecessary necklace ?
Too much going on here, which is a shame because we don't see enough of Whoopi on the red carpet, I don't think !!
That's it then for the Tony Awards - stay tuned for my look at Royal Ascot, which is happening this coming weekend !!
