Source: Alexandra's Blog Hi all! I just want to share with you the nice telegram that came from Russian President Medvedev congratulating the Russian women's team (Alexandra Kosteniuk, Nadezhda and Tatiana Kosintseva, Valentina Gunina and Marina Romanko) for our Gold medal at the recent Novi Sad European Team Chess Championship. The original news is on the Kremlin web site and the telegram is here . By itself it does not seem to be such a big deal, but in fact I think it's great that somebody as important as a country president values the results of their chess team. If all the countries did ... I've recently been exchanging e-mails with a fellow blogger who had come across an article by Susan Polgar . Now, I know for a fact that Susan is very aware of this blog (no small thanks to my incessant self-promoting attitude, lol). So I can only conclude that it was Susan's intent to make some bloggers aware that they were not being listed by blogshares. I did know about blogshares ... I'm not on the list of chess blogs and I did plan to apply to be included. In fact I plan on being in the top 5 on that list ... I don't ... Read Full Story

I thought I should take this opportunity to relate this odd coincidence to my readers: I just recently contacted Alexandra Kosteniuk regarding a side project I'm trying to start up and wouldn't you know that she mentioned to me that I should start that project by becoming a member of the Chess Journalists of America. Well, to be honest I've danced around CJA membership for a full year now and it's time to buckle down and seek membership. I've never considered what I do here as "journalism" because I tend to throw my opinion and commentary at just about everything. If that's journalism ... Read Full Story

The Miami Herald is reporting that the world’s female Chess champion is also an aspiring model. She is this Russian woman called Alexandra Kosteniuk who lives in South Beach, Florida (of all places). She sells calenders of her in a bikini on her website, too. Can’t you just be really good at one thing and keep it at that? An aspiring model who uses her good looks to promote chess, Kosteniuk has been compared to Russian tennis knockout (and Miami Beach resident) Anna Kournikova. (Kosteniuk debunks the comparison by noting that she has won individual tournaments, a feat the other Russian cannot claim.) But ... Read Full Story

For a while now, this -- and similar issues, such as the necessity of female-only events in chess -- have simmered, becoming hot topics now and again whenever an article like this WSJ editorial pops up.
