HOBART, Australia (AP) Leader Alfa Romeo eased past the halfway point in the Sydney to Hobart race late Sunday as the line honors contenders encountered light winds and the prospect of a slow sail to the finish on the island of Tasmania. Alfa Romeo, skippered by New Zealander Neville Crichton and taking advantage of an early breeze that his competitors failed to catch, held a 31-km lead over British entry ICAP Leopard.

THERE was heartbreak for the crew of supermaxi Etihad Stadium as Skipper Grant Wharington was forced to retire the 98-footer, dubbed the fastest boat in the world, just an hour into the Sydney to Hobart as Alfa Romeo led fellow supermaxis Wild Oats, ICAP Leopard and celebrity boat Loyal out of Sydney Heads in 23-knot southerly winds and a lumpy sea.  

NEW Zealand yacht Alfa Romeo is leading from favourite Wild Oats XI in the early stages of the Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race, but rival maxi Etihad Stadium is one of two early retirements from the race fleet.
